One of my favorite songs, it's only been played live in concert twice by the Rolling Stones in the 42 years since the 1972 recording for Exile on Main Street.  One of the very few political songs by the Stones, you can tell from the lyrics why they may not perform this song often.

Sweet Black Angel by The Rolling Stones | Song was about wrongly jailed Angela Davis who was freed from prison after public outrage.  She turned 70 years old January 26, 2014.

Song was written in 1970 by Jagger/Richards, recorded in 1972. I idolized her as a young girl.  And I still do. One bold, bitchin' revolutionary who was very bright and compassionate.  I will never forget her struggle.

Super Heavy - Newly Formed Band w/Mick Jagger & More

Damian Marley, Joss Stone, Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart and Indian film composer A.R. Rahman. The band has quietly been recording together over the past 18 months, with their debut LP planned for sometime around September.

About 18 months ago, the band gathered in a Los Angeles studio. None of them had prepared any music. "We didn't know what the hell we were doing," says (Dave) Stewart. "We were just jamming and making a noise. It was like when a band first starts up in your garage. Sometimes Damien would kick it off and then Joss would sing something on top of it. We might have a 22 minute jam, and it would become a six minute song."

The loose method was inspiring for Jagger. "One of the beauties is that, just speaking as a vocalist, I did other things," Jagger says. "I played guitar and harmonica, but there's four vocalist on the album. Not everything was reliant on me."

The band’s name came from some improvised vocals by Marley. "He was just singing 'Heavy, heavy, heavy, heavy, super heavy,'" says Stewart. "We thought that sounded good and it sort of stuck with us."

2 Of My Favorites

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has returned to his home in the United States after receiving brain surgery in a hospital in New Zealand. His wife Patti Hansen accompanied him on the journey.

Richards was hoping to be "getting back on the road with the Rolling Stones next month", his spokesman added.

Poor guy. I wonder if his life-threatening surgery may make him think about putting up his rock and roll shoes after this current tour is over?

Robert Plant recently returned to Wales' Rockfield Studios -- where he recorded his first solo album -- to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the launch of his post-Zep career.

Plant, 57, recalled how he arrived at Rockfield 25 years ago this week, in the wake of Zeppelin's split following the death of the band's drummer John Bonham.

He said, "As far as expectation went, I mean at the age of 32 when your career is finished, anything that came after that was a bonus really."

Keith Richards

I've been trying to run down the rumor that Keith Richards has had brain surgery after the fall in Figi. Some reports say: "After a brief hosptial stay he continued to have headaches, returned to the hospital and doctors are rumored to have gone into his brain to relieve the problem."

But no one has yet gone on record about it. CNN and Reuters are siting Monday's New Zealand Herald. No official word from thr Stones or Keith's representatives yet.

I go to some of the Rolling Stones message boards to see what they know and they're also baffled at this point; praying for good news. (Undercover, Shidoobee, RocksOff)

***UPDATE: May 9 - Official word from RollingStones.com. The surgery rumors are true and Keith is reportedly healing nicely. His wife and 2 daughters are at the hospital. Someone has brought in guitars.

***UPDATE: May 10 - Jerry Hall says Keith doing very well, and has talked to the family via email. But I'm not buying the 'fell out of a tree in Figi' story, are you?

STONED-The Story of Brian Jones

For many, Brian Jones was the style and soul of the Rolling Stones. Jones was not only a brilliant guitarist but also a fashionista in style-obsessed 1960s London. But in death he was simply dismissed as a rock’n'roll fuck-up.

Jones, oddly, is played by Leo Gregory, who has the body of a linebacker, not the lithe, feminine frame of the blonde, mop-topped rocker. The film opens with Jones holed up in the cute estate once the haunt of Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne. Frail and femme Brian Jones' character must be carefully cast. It appears that it wasn't. And the linebacker body is no good. I would have preferred they found someone with a mohawk and a slight frame than get the hair right and have a linebacker's body.

Someone should make the Anita Pallenberg story. She was a model and an actress and a heroin addict. She was also Brian's one time girlfriend, was once infatuated with Mick and was eventually Keith's wife and mother of their 3 children. I bet she has a few stories to tell.

Devendra Banhart, REM frontman Michael Stipe, Bright Eyes, Public Enemy frontman Chuck D and Rufus Wainwright will perform in the Bring 'Em Home concert in New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on March 20th, the third anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, to plead against the war in Iraq.

The singers will join activist Cindy Sheehan in her effort to bring the American soldiers home from Iraq and to stop the war.

Among the celebrities expected to attend the event are Jane Fonda, Alec Baldwin, Margaret Cho and Janeane Garofalo, while Steve Earle, Fischerspooner, and Peaches will be among the other performers. [MORE...]

I applaud these people who lend their time and expertise to the cause of bringing 'em home, but I can't help but feel there are many people too apprehensive to speak out against the war. Their silence is deafening.

Am I Just One Of Your Cocks?

The latest self appointed cultural watchdog groups will likely raise hell about what was censored during the Rolling Stones' performance during the Super Bowl halftime show and long for the tame breast of Janet popping out.

In "Start Me Up," the show's editors silenced one word, a reference to a woman's sexual sway over a dead man. The lyrics for "Rough Justice" included a synonym for rooster that the network also deemed worth cutting out. Link

In "Start Me Up", they censored the word come in "You make a dead man come" -- although this reporter says Mick censored himself. Not likely. He mentioned the Ed Sullivan 1967 show where Ed made them change the lyrics of "Let's Spend the Night Together" to "Let's Spend Some Time Together".

And in "Rough Justice", they censored the word cocks in the line "Am I just one of your cocks?"

It's beyond strange when you hear a brief silence over where the word "cock" obviously would apply. Oh, and the football games? Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks 21 - 10.
