Have It All (2006) by Planningtorock

Saturday, August 14, 2010

Damn, why haven't I heard of this chick before? I think this is her most recent work and this cd is fucking mind blowing. ALL of it.

The alter ego of multi-instrumentalist/programmer/videographer Janine Rostron, Planningtorock fuses all of Rostron’s talents into a dazzling audiovisual presentation that borrows from classical music, glam rock, spacey imagery, and hip-hop. A classically trained violinist who began playing at age eight, Rostron moved from Bolton, Lancashire, to Berlin in 2002 the Planningtorock persona first surfaced in 2004, when she began performing at the city’s clubs. Planningtorock’s live shows blurred the boundaries between concerts and performance art, with Rostron wearing outlandish helmets and costumes and interacting with video characters.

DOLL FACE

A machine with a doll face mimics images on television screen in search of a satisfactory visage. Doll Face presents a visual account of desires misplaced and identities fractured by our technological extension into the future.

Extra Action Marching Madness

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

No one has ever actually seen Oakland/San Francisco's Extra Action Marching Band actually march...at least not in a straight line.

Rather, the 40-plus-person ensemble barges and booms into streets, bars, festivals and crowds with a hypnotic drum corps, a heady horn section, and a scantily-clad flag team that's been known to stop traffic.

The Extra Action Marching Band will be in New Orleans this weekend for the annual Voodoo Festival.

"Our Favorite Things" is a new DVD/CD by the notorious experimental music and sound group Negativland, co-released by Seeland MediaMedia and Craig Baldwin’s Other Cinema Digital. The launch event takes place at 8:30pm this Saturday, December 1st at Other Cinema in San Francisco.

Or you can buy it online.

To understand the DVD compilation Our Favorite Things, one has to comprehend the basic tenets of Negativland’s philosophy. Thematically, the band appears to follow the William Burroughs’ method of cut and paste creativity. The notorious beat author, responsible for the incomprehensibly brilliant Naked Lunch, used to write long passages, tear out the typed page, cut the sentences into soundbite snippets, and reconfigure the prose into new, unexpected phraseology. Much of the music Negativland makes is standard rock and electronica stomps. There’s even a peppering of pop and pleasant valley sundriness to it. But the lyrics, when there are any, follow a more free flowing, stream of subconsciousness pattern. read more

LIZA LOU

Liza Lou is most known for her entirely bead-encrusted environments KITCHEN and BACK YARD that each took years of her life to create. Her medium of choice may be the diminutive glass bugle bead, but the resulting installations are anything but small scale. Her installations are truly labours of love that take countless hours of effort, so although the work for her most famous pieces was executed in the 90's, they are timeless representations of domestic life that are definitely worth seeing when the exhibitions travel. Kitchen is a monument to woman's work within the home, one created with millions of tiny beads glued onto the surfaces of many real kitchen objects. The installation is a full-sized kitchen of 168 square feet, fully-equipped with appliances, breakfast cereal and a sink overflowing with dirty dishes.

Extra Action Marching Band

Extra Action Marching Band

A 30 member musical performance group from Oakland/San Francisco recently left on a European tour leaving admirers and unwitting witnesses in their sequin-spewing wake.

Manifesto:
We, the EXTRA ACTION MARCHING BAND, shuffle, loiter, charge, and crawl around embracing our environment and quite frequently our audience. Defying categorization, this mutant lovechild of traditional peripatetic music and ecstatic turmoil consists of a hypnotic and driving drum section, a "smoking" horn line (w/a touch of sound effects), and is lead by a brutally sexy and provocative flag team. An Extra Action performance is a celebratory, transcendent spectacle that entices, amuses, arouses, and intoxicates the audience.

Rising Appalachia

This ain't #@&$%*! bluegrass music..."

Sisters Chloe and Leah each play some odd combination of vocals, the fiddle, banjo, jaw harp, kalimba, and some killer spoons. With their newest band member, Forrest Kelly, on a fine array of hand percussion, their tunes just got kicked up a big handful of knotches. With many a fine guest appearence from such madd musical magicians as the incredible Jan Smith, Larkin Grimm, Maurice Tunner (play that trumpet!), the ferocious Cailen Campbell, Barbara Panter (Hair of the Dog), and Witt Connah (the most bad-ass blues harmonica player around)...and a conglomeration of other fantastic and fine-tuned additives- their sweet sounds are bound to delight, sooth, or mystify.

Rising Appalachia are now living in Asheville and their new cd can be found at CDBaby.

Larry "Wild Man" Fischer

Monday, March 5, 2007

Derailroaded: Inside The Mind Of Larry "Wild Man" Fischer is currently running on Sundance Channel.

Josh Rubin's strangely fascinating documentary parses the life of outsider musician Larry "Wild Man" Fischer. Growing up in the '50s, Fischer was an undiagnosed manic-depressive schizophrenic who, after attacking his mother with a knife, landed in a mental asylum.

Eventually he headed to California in the late '60s, where Frank Zappa discovered him singing his own strange compositions for a dime a song along Sunset Boulevard. In a strangulated growl somewhere between a possessed Tiny Tim and Bobcat Goldthwait, Fischer's music is something of an acquired taste. Zappa championed him and he led a convoluted career appearing on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and landing on the British Top 50 charts.

Derailroaded is interspersed with plenty of talking heads delivering anecdotes, as well as footage of Fischer performing, but ultimately this is a film not about music or fame, but about the ravages of mental illness. Despite many moments of levity—such as a completely bizarre re-enactment of an interview between Dr. Demento and Frank Zappa, done with puppets—it's a devastating portrait of delusion and fathomless despair.

You sure can see the Zappa influence but man, oh man, was the poor guy ever out there.

ABOUT EBC

It wasn't long after 9/11, September 11, 2001, that I began this website. I felt compelled to connect with other people around the globe. I had recently heard about "weblogs" or "blogs" and I dove right into Blogger.com. I searched for others to connect with online and I found Ageless. It led to meeting many great friends to discuss events of the day. From then on it snowballed. Most importantly we offered one another support and friendship across the globe; finding that we were just a few keystrokes away.
