David Sedaris in the New Yorker

UNDECIDED
by David Sedaris

I don’t know that it was always this way, but, for as long as I can remember, just as we move into the final weeks of the Presidential campaign the focus shifts to the undecided voters. “Who are they?” the news anchors ask. “And how might they determine the outcome of this election?”

Then you’ll see this man or woman— someone, I always think, who looks very happy to be on TV. “Well, Charlie,” they say, “I’ve gone back and forth on the issues and whatnot, but I just can’t seem to make up my mind!” Some insist that there’s very little difference between candidate A and candidate B. Others claim that they’re with A on defense and health care but are leaning toward B when it comes to the economy.

I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?

To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

I mean, really, what’s to be confused about?

Strangers With Candy stars Amy Sedaris as Jerri Blank, a 47-year-old loser junky whore high school freshman with lesbian tendencies. Got that? As one might guess, the movie plays off the temptation, as well as the prohibition, implied in its name. It is a brand of comedy that invites one's sense of humor to venture where it has not dared go before.

Strangers with Candy shows the onscreen relationship between co-screenwriters/co-stars Paul Dinello (The Colbert Report, and the SWC TV series) and Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report, The Daily Show). The two play schoolteachers Geoff and Chuck, who are also squabbling gay lovers who offer a cynically comic spoof of gay relationships. [Read More...]

I've followed SWC since Comedy Central days and look forward to the movie. It was extremely raw for television and the writing is the best I've seen.

Sundance Film Festival - January 20 - 30, 2005
Just a few of the films I'd like to see next year.

Strangers With Candy / Director: Paul Dinello; Screenwriters: Stephen Colbert (From The Daily Show), Paul Dinello, and Amy Sedaris. Absolultely LOVED the television series which was cancelled after three years, and can't wait for the movie. more »

This Revolution - Director: Stephen Marshall is a topical story about Iraq and the relationships involving protesters, soldiers, photogs, and more. Synopsis and video can be found on GNN.

What Is It? / Director & Writer: Crispin Hellion Glover. What Is It? is a bewildering, unnerving, surreal, blackly comic film from the visionary mind of Crispin Glover that tells the inner and outer struggles of a young man facing villains and demons on multiple planes. Fairuza Balk does a voice in the film.

Reefer Madness (The Musical) / Director: Andy Fickman; Screenwriter: Dan Studney and Kevin Murphy. (A remake of the classic which has been a recent play and was released on DVD this year). We all know the story by now of how someone ends up at the house of evil, takes a hit from a funny cigarette and freaks out.

America's Biggest Dick - Dramatic Shorts Category, Director: Bryan Boyce. Unable to find any info on this one, but if it's about somebody named Richard, I'm going to be ill.

David Letterman's Worldwide Pants is producing its first film, an independent feature based on cable network Comedy Central's cockeyed cautionary tale, "Strangers With Candy" which ran from 1998 to 2000.

PLOT: Upon her release from jail, Jerri Blank (Sedaris), a 46-year-old ex-junkie/whore, starts her life over by enrolling in Flatpoint High School. With her mom dead, she lives with her dad and new stepmother, who hates her. The writing on this show was brilliant. I can't wait for the film. Link

Good morning to you...

:: The same team that brought "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" to SF now takes on twisted satire siblings David and Amy Sedaris' "The Book of Liz," a story about a woman with overly active sweat glands and a dream. See what happens when Sister Elizabeth Donderstock, a hardworking member of a group of religious recluses who call themselves "The Squeamish," leaves the safety of home and her job as a cheese ball maker to try her luck in the big city. What she encounters is a strange world full of boozers, users and funny-talking immigrants.

:: Robert De Niro, 60, has prostate cancer, but his prospects for a full recovery are good. You didn't hear much about prostate cancer not long ago; but it's everywhere now.

Amy Sedaris has a new book she collaborated on with Paul Dinello, and Stephen Colbert, called, "Wigfield: The Can-Do Town That Just May Not." Amy is David Sedaris' sister and was the creator and star of the Strangers With Candy Show on Comedy Central along with Colbert and Dinello. One of my all-time favorite television shows. Pure comedy gold.

Anyone See David Sedaris On Letterman?

I was reminded of it when I saw a link on metafilter. He stood center stage and read a story he'd written for Esquire Magazine. He was asked to write about Men's Accessories and chose to write about colostomy bags. He was hysterically funny. You may have heard David on NPR. His sister, Amy, is also hilarious. I began following her when I first saw her in Comedy Central's, 'Strangers With Candy', as Jerry Blank.

ABOUT EBC

It wasn't long after 9/11, September 11, 2001, that I began this website. I felt compelled to connect with other people around the globe. I had recently heard about "weblogs" or "blogs" and I dove right into Blogger.com. I searched for others to connect with online and I found Ageless. It led to meeting many great friends to discuss events of the day. From then on it snowballed. Most importantly we offered one another support and friendship across the globe; finding that we were just a few keystrokes away.
