On February 17, St. Louis, MO, garage rock quartet Living Things released their much-anticipated third album, Habeas Corpus, and it's solid as a motherfucker. No fancy riffs or vocal gymnastics, just a solid rock and roll sound.
The album was recorded in Berlin by the band -- St Louis, MO, brothers Lillian, Eve and Bosh Berlin, and guitarist Cory Becker. Lead singer Lillian (still looking like Jagger via Altamont) and band stay true to their lo-fi rock sound with only a modicum of compromise that may come with a new label. Or maturity.
The back story can be more interesting than the party line. Several years ago Lillian battled down a heroin addiction and went to jail several times. The Berlin brothers' Mom, mom, an activist from Chicago was raised Catholic and once tried to join the Black Panthers before moving to the conservative St. Louis suburb where her boys -- two of whom she named after their grandmothers -- were born.
While shooting a video in Prague, Lillian met the outstanding director, Italian filmmaker Floria Sigismondi. They married in 2004 and had a daughter that same year. YouTube | Website

Haven't given out my "Dickhead Award" in quite some time. The award is presented to someone in the news who's done something so radically stupid that you want to say, "What a dickhead". The honor goes to the Tennessee officers who shot and killed this family's dog while they were mistakenly stopped as suspects in a felony. The officers pulled him over and the passengers were ordered out of the car and handcuffed. Then they drew their guns on this family returning from a family visit. The dogs travelling with them also jumped out, as the family pleaded to let them close their car doors, and one officer shot the family pet's head right off in front of them all. Said the daughter, "I had never seen my father or brother cry until that day." The family was able to carry home the remains of "Patton" where they buried him in their backyard. This family lives in the next county over from me. CNN is also airing this story.

I think it's about time to bestow another "Dickhead Award" on a deserving soul. Texas Court Acts to Clear 38, Almost All Black, in Drug Case in Tulia, Texas. Tom Coleman was the lone police officer who's sole word sent 38 mostly black citizens to jail for a series of drug arrests that tore this town apart. Most have been jailed the past 3 or 4 years. Conceding that they had made a catastrophic mistake in relying solely on the uncorroborated testimony of an undercover officer, Texas is in the process of overturning those convictions. Swisher County is to pay $250,000 for immunity. They probably better dig a little deeper. Mr Coleman, I give to you my "Dickhead Award" for being one. Now, how are we going to let YOU make amends?

Lovely Theresa Duncan liked to go for drives along the Pacific Coast Highway in her butter-colored Alfa Romeo Spider, listening to Steely Dan. She liked the band for the stories they told about hard-luck characters. Some of their lyrics were read at her funeral, on July 21, in Lapeer, Michigan, her hometown.
When she moved to Los Angeles, Duncan had a two-picture deal with Fox Searchlight and had written and directed a pilot for Oxygen Media. She had "my boyfriend Jeremy Blake"—she was always bringing him up—literally the poster boy of the 2001 "BitStreams" exhibition of digital art at the Whitney Museum. That same year, Blake had been tapped by director Paul Thomas Anderson to create a hallucinogenic dream sequence for Punch Drunk Love, and singer-songwriter Beck had asked him to do a series of covers and a video for his album Sea Change (both released in 2002).

Generation S.L.U.T A Brutal Feel-up Session With Today's Sex Crazed Adolescent Populace. (was released Feb 2004) S.L.U.T. is author Marty Beckerman's acronym for Sexually Liberated Urban Teens, and in this outrageous, chilling blend of fact and fiction, the 20-year-old author characterizes his view of his generation: hypersexual, emotionally vacant, and disturbingly tolerant of abuse.
This isn't in the book, but speaking of promiscuous girls, let me tell you about one thing that clued me in early on: I found it a little odd, as the parent of a 16 yo daughter, that all of the young girls wear thongs when they're 12 years old. Later I was relieved to learn it wasn't just my daughter and friends, but my nieces and friends' daughters all over the world. Maybe I'm just old and in the way, but no one wore thongs when I was young. And it doesn't equal promiscuity, but I see why some young girls may be mis-lableled.
The more I think about it, maybe I should read this book. And everything else I can get my hands on. No matter how great a relationship I may think we have, we're still a generation apart which is another say of saying 'I don't know shit'. It's going to be one long-ass ride.Link
