ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - PAINTING WITH

Friday, February 19, 2016

Fucking brilliant. How do you not love Floridada? There's Recyling, Hocus Pocus, Golden Gal, Lying in the Grass, On Delay. My favorite song changes by the hour as this cd has already become my favorite one of theirs. I've only described a band twice as being genius. These guys are geniuses. Nobody does it better.

AnCo from the electronic balancing perfection, the mixing & the production to the vocalizing, the lyrics, to the solid if unusual rhythm that defines the undefinable Animal Collective band. Centipede Hz fans will love the new "Painting With" cd by Animal Collective now streaming on Spotify & for purchase on iTunes.

Panda Bear's Person Pitch

Friday, April 20, 2007

Panda Bear's recent record Person Pitch has earned rave reviews around the country. In an interview (which I can't find), he talked about approaching the record in the way that a DJ would approach a live set. When he moved to Lisbon he left most of his Animal Collective instruments in the states, taking only two BOSS Dr. Sample 303s, and thus all of Person Pitch is sample-based. The AC message board has been trying to determine what samples were used.

Many of the songs are based on loops from Joe Meek-produced Tornados songs. Two are listed below: "Red Roses and a Sky of Blue" contains the main riff from "Bros," and the opening of "Popeye Twist" is the basis for the second half of "Take Pills." "Red Roses and a Sky of Blue"'s opening riff was also used in the song "What I Do" from Animal Collective's 2005 BBC appearance. The loop from "Red Roses" is a personal favorite. All in all, the Tornados were a pretty average band, but Noah found these two strange transitional measures where the guitars chimed and intonated. It's a small bit of awesome in a pretty okay song. The first half of the aforementioned "Take Pills" comes from Scott Walker's "Always Coming Back to You". Elsewhere, a portion from a Cat Stevens song serves as the main driving guitar part in the second half of "Bros." There has been debate over whether the main theme of "Comfy in Nautica" was taken from the Akira soundtrack, though the choral hits used in the film don't match up entirely.

Finally, the ending of "Carrots" is taken from Kraftwerk's "Ananas Symphony" from their 1973 album Ralf und Florian, which is notable in their ouvre for being the first appearance of a vocoder. The sample begins at :29 and continues for fifteen or so seconds. Obviously, there are a number of unidentified samples.

Much props to the folks at rerz.net for their tireless research. (Where Animal Collective fans go for updates.)

Neon Bible - Arcade Fire

Tuesday, March 6, 2007

Neon Bible by Arcade Fire is officially out today ($9.99 if bought through their label) though many have been listening to some of the songs since December or so. When riding in the car, it is the one cd my daughter won't try to change so I'd say it has broad appeal.

The eagerly anticipated second album from Montreal's Arcade Fire exceeds all expectations. Neon Bible was written, produced, arranged, and performed by the Arcade Fire and recorded throughout 2006 in Quebec, New York, Budapest, and London with recording and engineering help from Markus Dravs (Bjork, Brian Eno) and Scott Colburn (Animal Collective, Sun City Girls). With string and orchestral arrangements by the band's own Owen Pallet (also Final Fantasy) and Regine Chassagne, Neon Bible is full of both half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds. Processed strings and mandolin. Quiet rumbles and loud rumbles. But mostly just eleven songs that the band thinks are really good!

Animal Collective
Following 2004’s widely acclaimed ‘Sung Tongs’ album and more than a year of snowballing momentum, Animal Collective return with an eagerly-anticipated new album – a truly stunning, inviting, often heart-warming experience. ‘Feels’ is the band’s seventh album to date and, as has come to be expected, sees them again kicking off from their previous release to explore another different direction. Where ‘Sung Tongs’ was largely acoustic-based and the product of just two members of the Collective (Avey Tare and Panda), ‘Feels’ is in contrast a full group effort (also including Geologist and Deakin). Moving further away from the suggestion of folkish affinities (they always sat in their own space, came at things from a different angle), it is electrified, rhythmically more urgent, and overall a considerably denser work. Those sweet melodies and big catchy hooks remain intact, and the songwriting is once again bold, brave and adventurous, as ever indelibly stamped with their own unique personality.

Vashti Bunyan
If it is possible to pour the silent musings of a unique mind that has come to freedom with itself and the world into songs, then Vashti Bunyan has managed to do so. And has kept a tenderness and childlike love for all the people and animals and things around her alive. These eleven songs will strike the listener with their empathy and gentle freedom. Even though it is mainly Bunyan’s adorable singing accompanied by some piano or guitar, the impression is immediate and lasting. Time is not being turned back here, it is simply made to stand still and listen. Both cds available Oct 17 and I'm really anxious to hear all the cuts.

Following the widespread acclaim of last year’s ‘Sung Tongs’ album, and this May’s ‘Prospect Hummer’ EP, Animal Collective return to the fray with a brand new three-track single, ‘Grass’, released on September 26th. The single will be available on both 7” and CD single formats, and precedes a new album, ‘Feels’, which will arrive three weeks later (17th October), and a full European tour. Lifted from that album, the title track of the single is a brilliant three-minute slice of feral, infectious pop, driven by pounding drums and yelping and hollering vocals.

Two further tracks – ‘Must Be Treeman’ and ‘Fickle Cycle’ are exclusive to this single. The former is a derailed slice of acid ambience – all mushroomed, munchkin vocals and collapsing veils of treated electronics, whilst ‘Fickle Cycle’ - a live favourite – is another stunning rhythmic piece that perfectly complements ‘Grass’, making this an incredibly strong single.

Acid ambience - the best kind.

News|Music

The more I hear from this cd, the more I like it. As in really like it. Local progressive radio station, WPVM, plays songs by Animal Collective quite often, specifically, the Sung Tongs cd with "Mouth Wooed Her" my favorite cut from it. After reading some reviews, they seem to be an either 'love them or hate them' sort of group and some say they're often trippy and psychedelic sounding. But very experimental with their sounds and instruments, almost child-like in their un-pretentiousness (is that a word?). Originality certainly goes a long damn way in the music biz in my opinion.

ABOUT EBC

It wasn't long after 9/11, September 11, 2001, that I began this website. I felt compelled to connect with other people around the globe. I had recently heard about "weblogs" or "blogs" and I dove right into Blogger.com. I searched for others to connect with online and I found Ageless. It led to meeting many great friends to discuss events of the day. From then on it snowballed. Most importantly we offered one another support and friendship across the globe; finding that we were just a few keystrokes away.
