Balls Out by Charles Potts

Thursday, January 1, 2009

For slinging truth directly to despotic criminal power in a heroic, selfless act of CONTEMPORARY conscience and righteousness, an act that many others could have done but none dared, Iraqi journalist/shoe-thrower MUNTADER AL-ZAIDI (pictured above, in action) is the clear choice for Arthur Magazine's coveted "Man of the Year" award for 2008.

In honor of the occasion, Charles Potts has composed this new poem, "Balls Out," which we proudly present here:

BALLS OUT
for Muntader al-Zaidi

We’ve found Hitler’s missing testicle
Lodged in George W. Bush’s nose.
Yes ladies and gentlemen
George Bush was snorting Nazi Nuts
When one of them got stuck in the cocaine.

Muntader al-Zaidi attempted a seasonal variation
on Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Sweet
With his shoes.

He really wanted to hit the visiting fascist in the face
The lame duck occupational Caesar of the colony of Iraq
To crack the American crackpot empire
With his shoes.

George Bush ducked al-Zaidi’s flying shoes
Just like he ducked
Every single other responsibility of the office he stole.

Duck this George:

Since the nefarious democrats didn’t have balls enough to
Impeach you, al-Zaidi impeached you with his shoes.

The Muntader al-Zaidi College of Journalism at Yale
Now open for admission.

We owe you a pension al-Zaidi.
We are all in prison
Until you are set free.

—Charles Potts

Ugly Ducklings

Alcoholic Poet
Compelling prose on addiction, suicide, loneliness-- the usual girly stuff. Outstanding!

UGLY DUCKLINGS
--by Alcoholic Poet

Her dress about her shins. In muted screams. In fits of loud rain that threatened to break the clasp her thighs held on her vagina. That musty breadbox littered will the stale crumbs of digested skin. The tall braille of an erect penis telling loud stories to blind fingers. In the stumble of her breath over the peaks. And the shush of her heart in the valleys.

Her underwear. Well, she never wore it. The grin of her breasts safe enough she thought between the cross of her arms. The advance of the rook. Two sips away from happiness. The sharp of the bishop. One square shy of clarity. The omnipotence of the queen. The ugly duckling cooing from within the forest of the sheets. The panic in reality. The calm of indifference. Paper demons wearing angels drawn in ink.

Her wrists that much redder. Her dress still listening. Intently. To the shiver of her legs. As her clothes dared to leave her. A small stone in so many squares of play. While the night speculated.

On the importance of ugly ducklings.

Given the likelihood that they'll never change.

Auguries of Innocence

Auguries of Innocence
by William Blake

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

A robin redbreast in a cage
Puts all heaven in a rage.

A dove-house fill'd with doves and pigeons
Shudders hell thro' all its regions.
A dog starv'd at his master's gate
Predicts the ruin of the state.

A horse misused upon the road
Calls to heaven for human blood.
Each outcry of the hunted hare
A fibre from the brain does tear.

A skylark wounded in the wing,
A cherubim does cease to sing.
The game-cock clipt and arm'd for fight
Does the rising sun affright.

Every wolf's and lion's howl
Raises from hell a human soul.

The wild deer, wand'ring here and there,
Keeps the human soul from care.
The lamb misus'd breeds public strife,
And yet forgives the butcher's knife.

The bat that flits at close of eve
Has left the brain that won't believe.
The owl that calls upon the night
Speaks the unbeliever's fright.

He who shall hurt the little wren
Shall never be belov'd by men.
He who the ox to wrath has mov'd
Shall never be by woman lov'd.

The wanton boy that kills the fly
Shall feel the spider's enmity.
He who torments the chafer's sprite
Weaves a bower in endless night.

The caterpillar on the leaf
Repeats to thee thy mother's grief.
Kill not the moth nor butterfly,
For the last judgement draweth nigh.

He who shall train the horse to war
Shall never pass the polar bar.
The beggar's dog and widow's cat,
Feed them and thou wilt grow fat.

The gnat that sings his summer's song
Poison gets from slander's tongue.
The poison of the snake and newt
Is the sweat of envy's foot.

The poison of the honey bee
Is the artist's jealousy.

The prince's robes and beggar's rags
Are toadstools on the miser's bags.
A truth that's told with bad intent
Beats all the lies you can invent.

It is right it should be so;
Man was made for joy and woe;
And when this we rightly know,
Thro' the world we safely go.

Joy and woe are woven fine,
A clothing for the soul divine.
Under every grief and pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.

The babe is more than swaddling bands;
Every farmer understands.
Every tear from every eye
Becomes a babe in eternity;

This is caught by females bright,
And return'd to its own delight.
The bleat, the bark, bellow, and roar,
Are waves that beat on heaven's shore.

The babe that weeps the rod beneath
Writes revenge in realms of death.
The beggar's rags, fluttering in air,
Does to rags the heavens tear.

The soldier, arm'd with sword and gun,
Palsied strikes the summer's sun.
The poor man's farthing is worth more
Than all the gold on Afric's shore.

One mite wrung from the lab'rer's hands
Shall buy and sell the miser's lands;
Or, if protected from on high,
Does that whole nation sell and buy.

He who mocks the infant's faith
Shall be mock'd in age and death.
He who shall teach the child to doubt
The rotting grave shall ne'er get out.

He who respects the infant's faith
Triumphs over hell and death.
The child's toys and the old man's reasons
Are the fruits of the two seasons.

The questioner, who sits so sly,
Shall never know how to reply.
He who replies to words of doubt
Doth put the light of knowledge out.

The strongest poison ever known
Came from Caesar's laurel crown.
Nought can deform the human race
Like to the armour's iron brace.

When gold and gems adorn the plow,
To peaceful arts shall envy bow.
A riddle, or the cricket's cry,
Is to doubt a fit reply.

The emmet's inch and eagle's mile
Make lame philosophy to smile.
He who doubts from what he sees
Will ne'er believe, do what you please.

If the sun and moon should doubt,
They'd immediately go out.
To be in a passion you good may do,
But no good if a passion is in you.

The whore and gambler, by the state
Licensed, build that nation's fate.
The harlot's cry from street to street
Shall weave old England's winding-sheet.

The winner's shout, the loser's curse,
Dance before dead England's hearse.

Every night and every morn
Some to misery are born,
Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight.

Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.

We are led to believe a lie
When we see not thro' the eye,
Which was born in a night to perish in a night,
When the soul slept in beams of light.

God appears, and God is light,
To those poor souls who dwell in night;
But does a human form display
To those who dwell in realms of day.

Human Be-In 40 Years Today

Sunday, January 14, 2007

Sunday January the 14th is the 40th anniversary of Golden Gate Park's Human Be-In.

"Close your eyes, man, and think of this: ten thousand people, most of them young, half of them stoned, in Golden Gate Park listening to music, to poetry, celebrating life, celebrating being human. Sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll. A Human Be-In."

"A Gathering of the Tribes for a Human Be-In," announced on the cover of the new issue of the San Francisco Oracle, would feature Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Richard (Ram Dass) Alpert, Dick Gregory, Lenore Kandel, Jerry Ruben, and All SF Rock Bands January 14, 1967, 1 to 5 pm in Golden Gate Park 30,000 people showed up. The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and others called the tune. Leary, in his first San Francisco appearance, uttered the sound bite of the decade: "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out."

Bukowski: Born Into This is just out on DVD. This is the definitive documentary about Charles Bukowski and features tons of footage of the late poet doing what he does best: reading, writing, drinking, fighting and talking about women. The extras alone can entertain you for hours; they include commentary by director John Dullaghan, home movie footage, extended interviews and footage of Bono and Tom Waits reading Bukowski's poetry. If you like what you see, check out the site for Factotum, a new movie starring Matt Dillon as Bukowski's alter-ego, Henry Chinaski.

Jodorowsky : “Peace Is Yours.”

"You are excrement. You can change yourself into gold", Alejandro Jodorowsky explains in his film The Holy Mountain. Because Jodorowsky the alchemist uses his work as an athanor. The initiation is made up of films (Fando & Lys, El Topo, Santa Sangre...), of strip cartoons (L’Incal, created with Moebius, La Caste des Métabarrons, created with Giménez...), of books and of the Tarot.

”...Peace can be true, we have evidence of it... The evidence - here it is - you see here we have a miracle. Look at the pleasure that this cat has in communicating with a human being. I’m not his master, I’m only a human being. It could take exactly the same pleasure with you. Do you want to see? Take the cat...You see... Stroke it... Here it is, it’s yours. Peace is yours.”

Alexandro Jodorowsky indeed dispenses the philosophy of the Tarot each Wednesday in a Parisian cafe, just to help those who suffer. The poet sows the seeds of consciousness. This interview took place a few minutes before one of these readings.

I like that he's seen petting a cat, writing poetry, and giving tarot readings. Sure helps to put a more normal face on this amazing director of very bizarre films.

I just ordered this copy of Arthur . I'd never heard of it until just recently. With a cover story on Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), and inside features on Lars von Triers, and a report on the Thelema convention, plus more music, comics, poetry, and art, for $5.00 I'm ordering this magazine today.

Moby and Public Enemy have teamed up for the iTunes exclusive download "Make Love F*ck War" due for release through V2 which is being made available today. Make Love Fuck War - dirty version

It's a treat to be upright, I'll tell you. I've felt so shitty and have been in the bed for days now. I'm anxious to be back in the blog groove and read all your latest posts and hope to do so real soon.

World Naked Bike Ride in Asheville was a big success with approximately 60 riders participating. A beautiful hot June day saw people lining the streets with cameras at the ready and the police gave the riders an univited escort in their cars and on their bikes. With the exception of two topless ladies, some clothes stayed on in the beginning, and halfway thru began peeling off. More riders joined the procession at different junctions and by the end of the ride, many were freely riding in the breeze with strategically placed foilage or body paint. Here are just a few Asheville pics; still for hoping more to show up.

"Dee Rimbaud is the Siddhartha of the Chemical Generation. 'Dropping Ecstasy With The Angels' is a testament to those who have taken the narrow path through the highest mountains: to those who fell off; and to those who flew away with the angels." (Poetry collection)

'Stealing Heaven From The Lips Of God' which should be released around September 2004, is Dee Rimbaud's first novel. It's a drug-fuelled, roller coaster ride through heaven and hell, a modern-day love story, and a fairy tale for people who don't believe in fairy tales. While you wait, you can read it online. Click on the book graphic. Stroll through her site for her artwork and much more from her. Link

{Replay} - Here's tired ol' Ralph Nader again. Ready to announce or not on Meet The Press this Sunday. The stage that's guaranteed to give you the largest amount of hoopla with the smallest amount of effort. Of course he's going to run. Getting 2.7% of the vote last time out isn't enough to discourage him. All the wingnuts will throw their money after him as his Hummer ego takes us all on a ride in his Corvair. Bitter, party of one? In 2002, yes. Not now. We're onto him now and it' won't be that close of a race. Oh, close, for sure. But not, 'Jeb-Bush'll-fix-it-for-me' close. Repentant Nader Voter site is urging former Nader's supporters to cut him loose.

{Battle Of The Johns} - As corny as it sounds, I feel duty-bound to kick Bush's ass out of his residence. John Kerry's too aloof and too much of an beltway insider. John Edwards is an inexperienced hick who used to be a mal-practice attorney. In a perfect world, we'd have the perfect candidates to choose from. Maybe it's one of the other Democrats who are/were running. But it's not and we don't and it isn't. This November, I have a choice between Kerry and Bush. Or Edwards and Bush. Anybody But Bush 2004 as the bumper stickers go.

This Is How We Cut & Paste or What I Did Today When I Should Have Been More Productive

The Great Cosmic Booty Call or Harmonic Convergence?

Clouds album coverHappy Birthday to Joni Mitchell who's celebrating her 60th birthday today. I bought 'Clouds' when it came out in 1969 and began playing Chelsea Morning and Songs To Aging Children, and That Song About The Midway on my guitar for my friends. I haven't played those songs in forever. When I pick up the guitar later, I'll gonna try Songs.... I still remember people at school asking, "Have you heard 'Clouds' yet?" Soon after, we would see her at Woodstock. Next came 'Ladies Of The Canyon'. For Free was very poignant. And the rhythm of Rainy Night House persuaded me to keep writing poetry. I just realized that now. Music memories are sacred. They hold pieces of your very soul.

ABOUT EBC

It wasn't long after 9/11, September 11, 2001, that I began this website. I felt compelled to connect with other people around the globe. I had recently heard about "weblogs" or "blogs" and I dove right into Blogger.com. I searched for others to connect with online and I found Ageless. It led to meeting many great friends to discuss events of the day. From then on it snowballed. Most importantly we offered one another support and friendship across the globe; finding that we were just a few keystrokes away.
