Molly Ivins, Columnist, Dies at 62

Molly Ivins, the liberal newspaper columnist who delighted in skewering politicians and interpreting, and mocking, her Texas culture, died yesterday in Austin. She was 62.

Ms. Ivins waged a public battle against breast cancer after her diagnosis in 1999. Betsy Moon, her personal assistant, confirmed her death last night. Ms. Ivins died at her home surrounded by family and friends. link
We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we're for them and trying to get them out of there. Hit the streets to protest Bush's proposed surge. If you can, go to the peace march in Washington on January 27. We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, "Stop it, now!" link
One hellraising writer and feminist is gone far too soon and I already miss her.

Pissing in the Liberal Punchbowl -- Again: The Democratic Conga Line in the American House of Lords

by Joe Bageant

Democrats are dancing around the head of Donald Rumsfeld like a scene from Lord of the Flies, heating up the tar buckets and plucking the goose in eager, nay, wild anticipation. Personally, I love the smell of tar and feathers in the morning and am quite willing to march on the White House as we speak. I like revenge as well as the next guy. But I also consider myself a compassionate man, one perfectly willing to let Bush's cabinet choose whether they wanna play the mommy or the daddy in the Big House, then move on to the real problems, such as the fact that a gallon of Old Grandad is nearly 50 bucks here in Virginia, or the fact that we are still a nation of people, half of whom were happy to elect a bunch of war criminals -- TWICE! -- and still are.

Ah, but lo and beshit, the Democrats have rescued us. If you can call running around like chickens with their heads up their asses while the Republicans did what they always do -- get caught stealing the national silverware, while bombing the hell out of some miserable piece of dirt as a distraction, thereby self-destructing in 12 years as usual, but getting obscenely rich in the process.

Pardon my cynicism, but the view is pretty damned sorry from here in the cheap seats. From down here it looks like every Yankee liberal north of Virginia seems convinced they are now shitting in such tall cotton that all they need do from here on out is foist Hillary Clinton on the many poor miserable bastards unfortunate enough to be called heartland Democrats because we don't have the balls to become heavily armed libertarians. Nominating Hillary might just drive us to it.

Meanwhile, we watch the only woman who can give the ambitious Hillary a run for the money when it comes to "the sneer behind the smile," Nancy Pelosi. Then it's on to the main act, in which we watch Honey Boy Obama "pass" in elite liberal society as a goddamned "negro", for chrissake! Will wretched wonders never end? Read More »

**Update--May 11, 2005
WAYNESVILLE - Pastor Chan Chandler submitted his resignation to the members of East Waynesville Baptist Church on Tuesday, a move some said was the only way to resolve current tensions at the church. link

Members Say Church Ousts Kerry Supporters
A Baptist pastor in North Carolina has touched off an exodus in his church by declaring Democrats are not welcome as members.

The Rev. Chan Chandler of East Waynesville Baptist Church in Waynesville ex-communicated nine members who refuse to support President Bush, according to WLOS-TV in Asheville, N.C.

Another 40 have left in protest in a controversy that began before the election last November and came to a head Sunday.

"He preached a sermon on abortion and homosexuality, then said if anyone there was planning on voting for John Kerry, they should leave," said Selma Morris, a 30-year member of the church. "That’s the first time I’ve ever heard something like that. Ministers are supposed to bring people in." "[Chandler] told us that if we didn't support George Bush we needed to resign our position and get out, or go to the altar and repent, and support George Bush."

Chandler, who could not be reached for comment, has insisted his actions are not politically motivated.

North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Meek sharply criticized the pastor Friday, saying Chandler jeopardized his church's tax-free status by openly supporting a candidate for president.

A contributor to the leading liberal weblog Daily Kos wrote: "For those that thought that there has not been a full scale war lanched against liberals; for those who didn't take the radical right's promise to "eradicate liberals" seriously, I present to you, Exhibit A: East Waynesville Baptist Church has just kicked out all its Democratic members."

This sad spectacle is the predictable consequence of the radical religious right's insistence on measuring a person’s religion by social-political litmus tests. How soon will others follow suit? [more »]

Happy St Stupid's Day!

The GOP Doesn't Reflect America
- by Michael Moore

Michael Moore. The Anti-Coulter. No spewing, slithering, deep-rooted Coulter hate permeating the USA Today convention update column. Showing that you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar douche. No matter your political persuasion, his article today is worth reading. An excerpt...

"I've often found that if I go down the list of "liberal" issues with people who say they're Republican, they are quite liberal and not in sync with the Republicans who run the country. Most don't want America to be the world's police officer and prefer peace to war. They applaud civil rights, believe all Americans should have health insurance and think assault weapons should be banned. Though they may personally oppose abortion, they usually don't think the government has the right to tell a women what to do with her body.

There's a name for these Republicans: RINOs or Republican In Name Only. They possess a liberal, open mind and don't believe in creating a worse life for anyone else."

"The media are finished with their big blowouts on the anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, and there is one thing they forgot to say: We're sorry. Sorry we let unsubstantiated claims drive our coverage. Sorry we were dismissive of experts who disputed White House charges against Iraq. Sorry we let a band of self-serving Iraqi defectors make fools of us. Sorry we fell for Colin Powell's performance at the United Nations. Sorry we couldn't bring ourselves to hold the administration's feet to the fire before the war, when it really mattered. Maybe we'll do a better job next war." - Rick Mercier in a column published Sunday in The Free Lance-Star.

» Rickie Lee Jones leans hard to the left and doesn't care who knows, saying liberal and left aren't dirty words. To accentuate her point, she breaks into "Ugly Man", one of her newer songs about a politician who's just like his father. "Tell Somebody", about of all things, the Patriot Act. "Chuck E's in Love", a sentimental crowd favorite was both a solo effort and an extended backup vocals display; the old Gerry & The Pacemaker's classic "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" was a surprise tune. And "Satellites" - always a favorite, still echoes long after it's over. Her voice was the shining star; the main attraction. Very soulful, fun & playful, sorrowful, and sometimes child-like. Filling up aching ballads with her poetic lyrics, unleashing her inner radical, she's equally about the music and the message, remaining faithful to her vision.

Liberal Friendly & Unfriendly Places - See if your US city is listed. Asheville, NC, is listed with several references to it being a New Age Mecca. Angels In America on HBO didn't disappoint. It was enormously entertaining. Part II is next Sunday. Did you notice who played the Rabbi at the funeral in the beginning? I didn't until they rolled the credits. Wow.

{music} Anyone watching PBS's The Blues show? It's excellent. What makes it more interesting to music lovers is that it shows the blues pioneers' songs interspersed with newer artist's versions of the old standards. I didn't know Cream's recording of Skip James' "I'm So Glad" raised money for a life-saving operation for James.

ABOUT EBC

It wasn't long after 9/11, September 11, 2001, that I began this website. I felt compelled to connect with other people around the globe. I had recently heard about "weblogs" or "blogs" and I dove right into Blogger.com. I searched for others to connect with online and I found Ageless. It led to meeting many great friends to discuss events of the day. From then on it snowballed. Most importantly we offered one another support and friendship across the globe; finding that we were just a few keystrokes away.
