WE - A Documentary

'We' juxtaposes the writer Arundhati Roy's eloquent 'Come September' address, with a collage of contemporary and historical footage of our world, against a stirring soundtrack (Lush, Curve, Love & Rockets, Boards of Canada, Nine Inch Nails, Dead Can Dance, Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Tortoise, Telepop, Placebo and Faithless).

Roy asks her audience to consider September 11 in the years prior to 2001, and what this date might mean to the citizens of the world. She says:
"This historical dredging is not offered as an accusation or a provocation. But just to share the grief of history. To thin the mist a little. To say to the citizens of America, in the gentlest, most human way: Welcome to the world."

She then refers to the September 11, 1973 CIA supported military coup in Chile headed by General Augusto Pinochet, the British government's September 11, 1922 mandate in Palestine and George Bush Sr's announcement to go to war against Iraq on September 11, 1990.
"...to dogmatically hold to only one set of ideas results in, I think, a slow, sad, and unnecessary form of brain death. Westerners need to start reading non-western press if they ever wish to understand the world better than they do at this moment."

'We'
was produced by New Zealander Scott Ewing, who initially released it anonymously on the internet. It first appeared on the Australian website: resist.com.au in September 2005.

Arundhati Roy and other international anti-war advocates on Monday accused the United States and Britain of war crimes in Iraq and called at a "tribunal" in Turkey for direct action against companies that profited from the conflict.

The symbolic tribunal, uniting former U.N. officials, legal experts and human rights activists, sought the immediate withdrawal of coalition forces from Iraq and payment of reparations for the damage caused during the conflict.

"We recommend that people throughout the world launch actions against U.S. and UK corporations that directly profit from this war," Arundhati Roy, India's Booker Prize-winning novelist, told a news conference at the end of the meeting. Link

And this from Scott Ritter...
Ritter told people they need to acknowledge and accept that the battle to stop the war has been lost and the United States will pay a heavy price.

"This is our Pearl Harbor. The U.S. has taken a big hit and it's going to take a long time to dig out."[more »]

Edited to add:
Just to clarify on Eric Rudolph and the people who are rooting for him... I've not heard of anyone around Asheville that wishes him well. Murphy, NC, where he was caught, is about 100 miles from here and that is where the comments came from. It's been my experience that the further out some people live in the mountains, the more they're likely to root for the underdog. No matter how bizarre the cause. And as Nurse said, it may be that the media sought out the few who spoke out for Rudolph, too. Most communities could easily find sympathy for an extreme abortion advocate. I'm sure his trials will bring this debate to the forefront really fast.

As protests overshadow G-8, Arundhati Roy is a new icon. Arundhati, who passionately campaigns against big dams, nuclear weapons and corporate globalization, is a must-read for many protestors.

ABOUT EBC

It wasn't long after 9/11, September 11, 2001, that I began this website. I felt compelled to connect with other people around the globe. I had recently heard about "weblogs" or "blogs" and I dove right into Blogger.com. I searched for others to connect with online and I found Ageless. It led to meeting many great friends to discuss events of the day. From then on it snowballed. Most importantly we offered one another support and friendship across the globe; finding that we were just a few keystrokes away.
